Fort Chaffee History

Fort Chaffee now serves as a maneuver training center for National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve soldiers. In fact, more than 50,000 soldiers train at Fort Chaffee annually. Set in the rolling hills of Western Arkansas, the post is a major mobilization site and up to 26,000 soldiers will report to Fort Chaffee should our nation ever return to war.

From its early days during World War II, Fort Chaffee was one of this nation’s key military installations. Fort Chaffee is the place where many thousands of young men saw their first days of military service. With its diverse terrain and an excellent river crossing site, it will continue to grow in importance and to serve the nation.

Fort Chaffee has also served its country after the war. From 1975 through 1976, Fort Chaffee received upwards of 50,000 Indochinese refugees. So skillfully was this task handled that, within five years, the post was called upon to help process more than 20,000 Cuban refugees.

Important to area sportsmen, the Fort Chaffee Wildlife Management Area offers some of the best hunting and fishing in Western Arkansas. Fort Chaffee has a large whitetail deer population and is very popular with archery hunters.
