| State mandated requirements: The media specialist position requires a master of education degree with major in educational media (MEd) As outlined in Arkansas Act 1786 of 2003, the job description of a media specialist is divided into three areas: information specialist, instructional consultant and library media center administrator. An information specialist's job function is to: 1) provide resources available to patrons through a systematically developed collection within the school and through access to resource outside the school; 2) provide assistance to patrons in identifying, locating, and interpreting information housed in and outside the library media center; 3) provide learning opportunities related to new technologies, use, and production of a variety of media formats; and 4) provide instruction in the use of the library media center. A plan must be developed and implemented that insures skills are taught in a logical sequence for kindergarten through grade twelve. An instructional consultant participates in district, building, department, and grade level curriculum development and assessment projects. Additionally as a consultant, the specialist: provides professional development in new and emerging technologies, use of appropriate technologies, incorporation of technology into the instructional program, and laws and policies pertaining to the use and communication of ideas and information including copyright law; and keeps patrons informed of new acquisitions of software and hardware and instruct patrons in its optimal use. No less than one-third of the library media specialist's time shall be spend as an information specialist allowing time for administrative tasks such as ordering of books and materials, processing items for usage, financial planning and accountability, organizing, directing and evaluating the library media program and other management duties. Duties may not be assigned outside the library media center for the library media specialist. At Greenwood the Library Media Specialists' contract is 201 Days. 178 - Student/Teacher interaction days. 1 - Workday prior to the first student day. 10 - Professional Development Days. Six of these are in the summer; four during the school year. 2 - Parent/Teacher Conference Days. 10 - Extended Days. The media specialist receives an additional index for being the high school webmaster. The website is operated locally on a file server registered with APSCN.
