- The South Sebastian County
Historical Society was organized on February 24, 1963. The original
purpose of the Society was the preservation and marking of local
landmarks, compiling and preservation of dates concerning past events of
local interest; the establishment of a museum to house mementos of the
area and times; and to publish a periodical which would remain a legacy
for future generations. All of these goals continue to be met.
-
With approximately 250 annual members, the group has expanded
from the original Old Jail museum to a historical district located on the
southeast corner of the Greenwood town square. The Key periodical
has been published continuously since 1966. Members have been eager to
share the local history with local citizens, school children and tourists
with a variety of programs throughout the year. During Arkansas History
Month classes are invited to tour the district with SSCHS volunteers.
- Memberships run from January 1 to December
31
each year. Annual individual membership is $15, family membership is
$25, supporting membership is $50, contributing membership is $100 and
life membership is $250.
Membership includes annual copies of
The Key.
