Genealogy Terms

 

Ancestor… Someone from whom you are descended (but usually more remote that a grandparent).

 

Census Records … Every ten years the federal government makes an effort to count its population by sending census takers to homes and gathering information for statistics. Material gathered assists people in searching for ancestors.

 

  Family tree… A list of a person’s ancestors compared to the visual image of a tree with the trunk being the individual, the main branches being their father's and mother's families; the smaller branches being grandparents, etc.

 

GEDCOM (GEnealogical Data COMmunications) … a generic database format designed to allow users to share family history database files between differing genealogy software.

 

Genealogy … An account or history of the descent of a person or family from an ancestor; enumeration of ancestors and their children in the natural order of succession; a pedigree.

 

PAF (Personal Ancestral Files) … a popular genealogy program published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

 

Privacy issues … Census records are not released for the average lifetime of a person – 70 years. Files that you publish outside of your family should not include vital information about living members of your family.

 

Soundex … A system of filing names used in the 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930 census records. Names are assigned a numeric value to assist finding variant spellings of the same surname.
