Below is the kitchen room of the double dog trot cabin built in the 1840's. The busy housewife would spend many hours working in this room. A spinning wheel is in the corner as well as an early model washing machine. Look closely for an old washboard and washtub. Most cabins did not have a washing machine. A wood stove for baking and cooking is in the corner by the door. A wash pan is on the back wall. The family would wash their hands and scrub their faces before sitting at the table. The table is set and ready for the family to have their meal.
The second room of the dog trot cabin was a multi-purpose room. It was used for a bedroom, parlor, music room, library and nursery. A sleeping loft is found at the top of the wooden steps by the inside door. Notice the three doors in each room of the cabin. The front door opens to the covered porch on the front, the inside door opens to the dog trot. The back door opens to steps on the backside of the dwelling. These opened doors allowed for the cooling of the rooms in the warmer months and lots of drafts in the colder months. The rooms were heated with wood in the stone fireplaces .
